A few years ago, Bryce Dallas Howard would’ve been best known as the daughter of famed director Ron Howard. But that all changed in 2004, when Bryce delivered a memorable and star-making performance in M. Night Shyamalan’s The Village. She essentially carried the entire film on her slender shoulders, ensuring that nobody will ever accuse her of nepotism.
2005 was a slow year for Bryce, who generally stayed out of the spotlight and just kept working. Her one role was in Lars von Trier’s sequel to Dogville, Manderlay, which followed her character, Grace (previously played by ), as she attempts to free a group of slaves from a plantation. The movie premiered to almost unanimous praise at the Cannes Film Festival and is set for limited release this year.
Bryce reteams with Village director Shyamalan in one of this year’s most anticipated titles, Lady in the Water, a fantasy about a mermaid who lives in a swimming pool. Also keep an eye out for Bryce in Kenneth Branagh’s latest Shakespearean adaptation, As You Like It, where she will play opposite such notable names as Kevin Kline and Alfred Molina. Finally, Bryce will take a stab at epic adventure in Mary Queen of Scots, which details the legendary historical figure’s rise to power and untimely death.
